What would you do if your child was acting like this (he had the grades and everything good)?
Okay, so I describe myself as this type of child.
I am going to be a senior when high school begins this year and I am 17 years old.
Okay your child makes the honor roll at an academically difficult school, he has never had anything bad on his record and the teachers always send good reports about him, at home he studies a lot and plays videogames, he does not do his own laundry because you as a parent would not let him. Also, he has went through a lot in his life because he was a different race than other kids. You are an Asian parent and the child is Asian as well, you have to live in the deep south because of a job and daily your child is harrased and assaulted whenever he goes out in public because he is Asian since he is basically the only Asian in town. He complains about the town being crappy everyday and swears to get out and never come back.
How do you deal with this?
I would teach my child not to worry about what other people think and to have pride in his heritage. To keep up his studies and in a year he will be able to move out of this crappy town and go to college and make something of himself. Simple as that.
To you: I live in the Atlanta, GA area and am white. I have a daughter that is the exact same as you (except white). We moved up here from Florida 4 yrs ago and she hates it as well and has had to deal with racism at her school. She found out about a program that the school had that will allow her to go to a local state college this year instead of doing her senior year at the high school. She had to have a 3.75 GPA and a 1600 SAT, which she was over on both. Unfortunately it might be too late for you to enter this program. The deep south is full of racism, I feel for you. Like I said earlier just keep your head down and study like heck to get out of there. Your parents are stuck because of his/her job. It is a really tough economy right now and it is difficult to get jobs so you are going to have to deal with it. I’m sure your parents share your misery and it makes them sad, but they have no choice. Unfortunately life is not fair and is tough. Good luck to you.
